BONES & ALL

Bones & All

“ Let’s be people, let’s be them for a while.”

Watching Bones And All was the first time I’ve seen real love on the big screen in a long time. Luca Guadagnino gave the world a beautiful depiction of real, deep, and raw love. The kind where you’d sacrifice yourself for the one love. Maren and Lee only have each other. In their own reality they’re the only “good” people they know to exist. Everything and everyone in the world is a threat to their love. It’s very magical. This is my favorite Luca Guadagnino project ever.

“ I think you got used to being locked up and invisible and alone, and now you’re out in the world…and you’re seeing yourself for the first time, and that’s freaking you out. I feel like I’m seeing myself too”

After being alone for such a long time, both Maren and Lee, finally found themselves within each other. They didn’t have anyone nor anything else in the world. Maren and Lee have a good relationship–romantic or friendship. A good relationship where both parties help each other.

Maren constantly states throughout the beginning of the film, when her father separates himself from her, that she is alone. Maren grew up unable to identify what the hunger was or meant. She never knew if anyone else had the same needs as her. For Lee, he was unhappy with the life he was living. He felt disgusted by his own existence. He had the idea of him being a bad person. He didn’t want to do what his hunger inevitably made him do. But Lee had his sister, she was the only person in the world he cared for. Following the incident with Lee’s father, he was unable to safely visit his sister. No matter how much he hated himself he could never leave his sister behind. When Maren found Lee, she found a part of herself. When Lee found Maren, he found a partner.

Although, Maren and Lee were never able to fully run away from anything. They could eat whoever they wanted and drive away to another state—but the hunger never left. Their hunger, amongst their trauma, are the only things they can never truly escape.

What a gentle, incredible love story.
